I picked up a serving shift today at the OG. It was alright where money was concerned. I could have made more if people tipped appropriately. Take the amount of the bill, move the decimal over one place to the left and double that amount. That is 20%.
i.e.--
$20.00
2.000
$4.00
You have good service, the server is nice and helpful, and your food is good, I say leave 20%. If you have trouble with math you can bring your calculator. Some phone even have tip calculators built in.
I believe the problem is this area. People are ignorant or just plain cheap. Well quit it. If you can't tip properly when you go out, DON'T GO OUT.
In the state of PA servers are paid $2.83/hr. We count on tips as part of our salary. We also tip out bussers and bartenders.
Here is an excellent site for anyone in the restaurant industry. The Stained Apron . You can't make this stuff up.
Update: I have a question from one of my faithful readers. Julia, from PA, asks how to tip people that perform other services. For example dog groomers and hairdressers. I used to tip our old dog groomer $10. Magnus's bill was usually $48. Our new dog groomer we usually buy her citrus vodka (she's Michael's good friend). Our hairdresser I tip around 20%.
Good question. Thank you Julia!!
